Italy, Spain: Major destinations of drug traffickers ' NDLEA

The Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency has listed Italy as the country with the highest frequency distribution in the destinations of suspected drug traffickers arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in 2010.Information provided by the Head, Public Affairs of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said of the 200 suspects arrested in the year under review, 38 of them were heading for Italy; 27 for Spain; 24 for the United Kingdom; United States, 10; and Germany, eight.The data also showed that 38 of the suspects were to board Iberia Airline; Alitalia- 31; Emirates - 15; Turkish Airline- 15; Quatar- 14; KLM- 11; South Africa Airline- 10; and Arik Air - 10. Others were Air France, with nine suspects; Virgin Atlantic- eight; Delta Airline- eight; British Airways- seven; Ethiopian Airline - six; Air Nigeria - three; Lufthansa- two; and Kenyan Airways- one.Ofoyeju said, "The total number of arrests made in 2010 at the MMIA was 200; 191 were arrested while travelling, while nine were arrested within the country during follow-up raid operations. Of the 191 arrested, 41 were coming into Nigeria, while 150 were going out of the country."In a report released by the NDLEA recently, the agency had arrested 291 suspected drug traffickers between January 2010 and September 2011, while it intercepted 612.68 kilogrammes of narcotics which street value stood at N6.1 bn.The MMIA Commander of the NDLEA, Hamza Umar, had said, "In 2010, the command intercepted 200 drug suspects including 172 males and 28 females, with 399.431kg of drugs consisting of 237.5kg of cocaine, 44.907kg of heroin, 42.050kg of cannabis, 74.755kg of methamphetamine/amphetamine and 0.240 grams of other psychotropic substances."Between January and September 2011, a total of 91 drug suspects, comprising 81 men and 10 women, were apprehended for trafficking 213.249kg of narcotics consisting 79.696kg of cocaine, 21.705kg of heroin, 57.705kg of cannabis, 44.723kg methamphetamine/amphetamine and 9.400kg of other psychotropic substances."
