Nigeria exposed to climate change risks ' Report

Nigeria has been named as one of the top countries with extreme climate change risks, a survey of about 200 nations has declared.This was contained in a report by Reuters, an international news agency.The report named Haiti as the country with the highest risk from climate change, while Iceland was the least vulnerable. Thailand ranked 37th.While Asian and African megacities were the most exposed countries to climate change risks, such cities, according to the report, "face the highest risks from rising sea levels, floods and other climate change impacts."The survey, aimed at guiding city planners and investors, also ranked the top 20 fastest-growing cities by 2020 in terms of risk, based on different indices. It mapped the world in 25-square-kilometre segments, according to vulnerability, making regional assessments easier.It said, "Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, is the megacity most at risk with an extreme ranking. Other megacities at extreme or high risk comprise Manila, Kolkata, Jakarta, Kinshasa, Lagos, Delhi and Guangzhou."Population growth in these cities combines with poor government effectiveness, corruption, poverty and other socio-economic factors to increase the risks to residents and business."The report said many other cities were also vulnerable to climate change, globally, adding that better governance, greater wealth and better policies made them more able to adapt.Maplecroft, which conducted the survey, analysed the exposure of populations to climate related natural hazards and sensitivity of countries in terms of population concentration, development, natural resources, agricultural dependency and conflict.
