Who Will Marry Our Pastor's Daughter' (III)

Published by Guardian on Sun, 30 Oct 2011

IF Brother Okon felt he had prepared for the bombardment of questions members of the marriage committee would hurl at him, such feeling had been clearly deceptive. Elder Obi fired a flaming salvo. Okon looked at the unsmiling face before him and fidgeted. It was a hit below his Christian belt. The previous Sunday, Pastor John had announced to the church the formation of a board of elders who would critically examine marital intentions. He had become inundated with cases of several youths eager to 'fly' into matrimony. He was sure he would need assistance. The youths, so concerned, had no problem with the new idea. It was just another addition to the many committees that made up the church: the most interesting being 'The Late Comers Discouragement Squad', LCDS. (You won't believe it.) It was a group that had the mandate to look into the menace of lateness among members, proffer far-reaching solutions and present a white paper to the pastor within a two-month period. (You didn't say haba! did you')Their problem started when Pastor John included Elder Obi among the committee members. Elder Obi!!! They knew him. They knew his wife. They also knew the questions, which many times, in their minds, they asked: 'How does his wife cope with him'' Now they ask: 'How did he make the list''Brother Okon knew there was no evading the question. He had to answer it. If he said yes or no, Elder Obi's next turnings could jeopardise his dreams of marrying the beautiful sister of his dreams. At once, his past and future pinched his skin rudely.Brother Okon reached a hand into his pocket, pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the sweat off his face.Next week.
