C/River bye-election: Constituents urge UNICAL VC to run

Published by The Nation on Sun, 12 Jul 2020

By Dare OdufowokanA Pressure group, We the People of Cross River North (WePCRN), has called on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Zana Itiunbe Akpagu, to come forward and contest for the vacant senatorial seat of Cross River North senatorial district, occasioned by the demise of Senator Rose Oko. The group, while sympathizing with the family of the late Senator Oko, said that the people of the senatorial district are yearning for the man of the people to ensure the continuation of progressive representation at the red chamber. The statement was signed by Egaga Ushie, Achu Oti, Ejim Agim, Idagu Ushie, Mkpeh Inah and Inaku Olouhu, among others. In a release in Calabar, Cross River State, signed by its zonal coordinators, the group admonished the Vice Chancellor to liaise with the good people of the senatorial district in order to give the area people-oriented leadership and tap from the goodwill and kindheartedness of President Muhammadu Buhari towards Cross River State, which, unfortunately, has been bungled by moribund leadership in the State. Harping on the administrative prowess of Professor Akpagu, the group added that he enjoys popular acceptance among youths, elders, traditional rulers, businessmen and women, across the five local governments that make up the senatorial district.READ ALSO:Cross River gets five COVID-19 casesOur conviction and call to the VC to vie for the seat is informed by his track records of services to humanity as well as his closeness to the grassroots, cordial relationship with the traditional rulers and youths in Cross River State at large, which has earned him the honour of being conferred with over 18 chieftaincy titles across the state. As the vice chancellor of the University of Calabar, Zana, as he is fondly called by both the old and young, has been working seamlessly with students, teaching and non-teaching staff as well as all the labour unions in the university, to foster unity, peace and progress and engendering educational, social and infrastructural development.
