Bayelsa 2012: More Obstacles For Alaibe

Published by Guardian on Sun, 30 Oct 2011

THERE seems to be more challenges for Mr. Ndutimi Alaibe, the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as he intensifies his bid, not only to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but also to get a waiver that will enable him contest the primary of November 19 in Bayelsa State.A fortnight ago, Alaibe had announced his return to PDP. Shortly afterwards, his kindred at the Ward 7 of the ruling party in Kolokuma/Opokuma council denied he had returned to the party.Undeterred, he went straight to the party headquarters and obtained a nomination form for the scheduled party primary, having applied for a waiver.Piqued by the action, the leadership of the party in Kolokuma/Opokuma chapter threatened a legal action, if the national secretariat goes ahead to grant a waiver to Alaibe.Alaibe had written a letter dated September 10, addressed to his ward chairman, pleading that he be re-admitted. But the leadership of the party, at the chapter level, in a letter to the Acting Chairman of the party Alhaji Abubaker Baraje, said they had not received any such letterfrom Alaibe. The party at his home council area had warned that if the national secretariat gives the former PDP strongman any waivers they would have no other option but to go to court to seek redress. When Alaibe went to pick his nomination form at the national secretariat of the party, he had told reporters that he was expectingthat a waiver would be granted him.Having been so convinced that he was going to get his waivers and participate in the Thursday screening of governorship aspirants in the party in Port Harcourt, he was surprised when he was told to go and sort out a few issues with the leadership of the party in the state. The Brigadier Idi Adamu-led screening committee did not get a clear signal from the National Working Committee (NWC) on the waivers status of Alaibe. As it was reported, the NWChad not concluded deliberation on the request, but the application was returned to the National Vice Chairman of the party, Chief Edet Nkpubere, to effect correction of procedural errors.
