Published by Nigerian Compass on Mon, 31 Oct 2011

The ongoing fight against breast and cervical cancer has received an added boost with Fashion Fantasia! The event which is a benefit fashion show and fundraiser aimed at increasing awareness and raising funds to help curb the spread of both breast and cervical cancer, will take place on the today at the Four Points Hotel, Oniru. It would be an evening of a fusion of fashion, information and inspiration.Fashion Fantasia! is an initiative of Leading Ladies Nigeria; an organization positioned at the forefront of assisting women particularly those in Sub-Saharan Africa achieve their set goals and dreams in life. The event is being organized in conjunction with Gbagyichild entertainment; initiators of Taruwa ' the much loved poetry and music event.According to a statement from the organizers of the event: 'The rate at which young people, especially young women are being infected with cancer is very alarming; which is essentially why we're using fashion as a platform to ensure that people realize just how important it is to get their monthly checks done. Early detection of any type of cancer helps increase the rate of survival; and this is one of the key things we hope to re-iterate with this event.'Speaking further, they said: 'The event will feature exciting and breathtaking designs from Gogo Majin of GM4FM, Wana Sambo, Bayo Lawal of Orange Culture, Priscilla Suchi Best of Suchille Clothings, exciting musical performances from multi-talented artistes, presentations from cancer prevention NGO's, health insurance companies and lots more. There will also be a special segment that features stories from cancer survivors, how they are dealing with the after effects of the disease and how the audience can learn from their experiences'.Funds would be raised for 100 young women who are ordinarily unable to afford breast and cervical cancer screening and to afford them the unique opportunity to benefit from the procedure. On the whole, Fashion Fantasia! promises to be a worthwhile and thoroughly enjoyable event.' In January this year, Leading Ladies facilitated a mentoring and capacity-building seminar for young women tagged 'Dare to Dream' which had as speakers such as Funmi Omitowoju, Former COO UBA Prestige, Bukky George, MD CEO HealthPlus Pharmacy and CasaBella International Limited, and Lisa Folawiyo, Creative Head, Jewel By Lisa.
