Nigeria hosts information security conference

The Information Security Society of Africa, Nigeria, is set to host its second information security conference in November to prepare for the introduction of the cashless economy.In a statement on Thursday, the ISSAN President, Mr. David Isiavwe, stated that the conference, which would hold in November, was aimed primarily at raising awareness on information security in Nigeria.It stated that the theme, Top Security Threats/Breaches and Counter-Measures in Cyberspace would focus attention on the increasing rate of cybercrime worldwide and assist Nigeria towards securing all electronic platforms used for e-commerce within Nigeria and ensuring the security of Banking Systems and applications, ATMs, e-government systems and the entire cyber space in Nigeria.The statement further disclosed that participants in the conference would be drawn from the Banking and Telecoms industries, IT Consultancies, Regulators, manufacturers and service providers.Major highlights, according to the statement, are two technical demonstrations to be delivered during the workshop.ISSAN is concerned about the rising trend of information security threats in the cyber space and their implication on the financial and social landscape of Nigeria, especially as the country is gradually preparing to move into a cashless society. It is hoped that this workshop will raise awareness of stakeholders of the challenges of cyber threat and proffer workable solutions to these threats so that our country will not be a haven for cyber criminals.Our mission is to achieve the security of all electronic platforms used for e-commerce within Nigeria. We are also significantly involved in ensuring the security of the banking systems and applications, ATMs, e-government systems and the entire cyber space in Nigeria, the statement further said.ISS was established in response to the increase of information security threats facing companies in Africa. Its goal is to create a forum for the exchange of information security-related ideas and experience between members and also raise awareness of potential vulnerabilities within organisations for the adequate protection of corporations operating within the continent.
