Capkovic, Hendler win Governor's Cup tourney

Published by Punch on Mon, 31 Oct 2011

KAMILCapkovic, winner of the 11th edition of the Governors Cup Tennis Tournament in Lagos, has attributed his victory in the final match against Malik Vijayat of India to resilience.Capkovic told the News Agency of Nigeria moments after the match that he had to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.Seeded number one in the competition, Capkovic beat Indias Malik Vijayant, seeded eight, in two sets 6-2, 7-5 in a tie break. The first set was good after playing with much confidence, but the second seemed a bit difficult.I was a bit tensed when I found out that I was losing at the start of the second set but I told myself I can make it.The Slovakian, who won the 2008 edition of the competition, expressed the hope of returning in 2012 to defend his title.Unlike the previous years when I could not attend the tournament as regularly as I would have loved to, I hope to be back next year now that I am the defending champion. He acknowledged the contribution of his fans who cheered him to victory and thanked the organisers for putting up a good show. The winner of the womens singles event, Taramyn Hendler, was delighted at her remarkable performance in the final match. The Belgian defeated Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-4, 7-5 in straight sets to the delight of the cheering and appreciative spectators.Words cannot express my feelings, I am so excited at winning the trophy because I had wanted it for a long time. Now that I have bagged the silverware in this competition, I will now go back to my country for another competition; with the confidence that I can play to win.
