Aregbesola laments as robbers raid drug depot

Published by Punch on Mon, 31 Oct 2011

For two and a half hours, suspected armed robbers stormed the Central Medical Store of Osun State Government, in Osogbo, during the early hours of Sunday, carting away drugs worth several million of naira.A statement by the Osun State Bureau of Communication and Strategy, on Sunday said the stolen drugs were purchased in bulk for the free health programme of the Rauf Aregbesola administration.According to the Head of the bureau, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, some of the stolen drugs bore the inscription of Osun State Government. Two of the guards at the medical store, who were on duty when the incident occurred, alleged that the robbers came in a truck. The two security men, who said they were tied by the robbers, explained that the bandits stormed the store located behind Central Bank of Nigeria building along Gbongan-Osogbo road around 1am and left at 3.30am.They said the robbers cut all the padlocks to the iron doors leading to the store, adding that they selected the drugs they stole after gaining entry.Okanlawon said, Some of the drugs already discovered to have been carted away included antibiotics, anti-malaria and analgesics. We would like to state categorically that this ugly development amounts to a deliberate attempt to sabotage the comprehensive and qualitative health plans of the Rauf Aregbesola administration, which had promised to restore healthy living to the Osun citizenry. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Temitope Ilori, visited the drug store for an on-the-spot assessment on Sunday.Commissioner of Police, Osun command, Mr Solomon Olusegun, who said the case had just been brought to his notice, said investigation had commenced into the robbery.
