IMF wrecks Nigeria's education sector, says ex-NDIC chairman

The InternationalMonetary Fund(IMF) has been identified as the culprit behind the decay in the Nigerian education sector.Former chairman of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) board and now the chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Ambassador Hassan Adamu, disclosed this at the weekend while being presented with the letter of appointment as ESUT chancellor in Abuja.Ambassador Adamu stated that the Federal Government was spending a large percentage of its budget on the development of the education sector.He, however, noted that with the complaint that government's spending on education was colossal and the policy directive to the Nigerian government and other governments in Africa to reduce funding on education, the IMF had invariably orchestrated the rot in the sector.The new chancellor, who considered his assignment at ESUT as a difficult one, said his first priority was to ensure that the students graduating from the university were not half-baked.He identified collective efforts between the government and the private sector as panacea for improved funding of universities.
