Family of 5 plunges into river in Kano

Published by Tribune on Mon, 31 Oct 2011

NO fewer than fivemembers of a family, at the weekend, lost their lives in an accident when the Mercedes Benz in which they were travelling plunged into Tamburawa river, 21 kilometres on the Kano-Zaria federal highway. This is just as the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kano, Hassan Kogari, blamed the accident on bad road, saying the same spot had claimed many lives in the past.A source hinted that the accident occurred around 8.00a.m., when the victims were coming from Kaduna while all efforts to rescue them were unsuccessful. The five members of the family, according to the source, included three elderly persons and two children, while another source claimed that they were three elderly persons and three children. It was gathered that the car in which the family was travelling entered a pothole by the entrance of the bridge, making the driver to lose control after which the car plunged into the river. It was also learnt that the moment the accident occurred, local divers mobilised for rescue operations before the arrival of fire service officials who were able to recover the mangled bodies of some of the deceased and an infant whose head was severed.Confirming the incident, the FRSC sector commander who blamed bad road for the auto crash, appealed to relevant authorities to repair the bad portion of the road to save lives.Speaking further on the accident, Kogari disclosed that the same spot at the entrance of the bridge had, over the past six months, caused similar crashes that had claimed no fewer than 34 lives.
