Three months of darkness is enough punishment, Gbelu, Adegbayi, Olode residents lament

Published by Tribune on Mon, 31 Oct 2011

WHEN wouldan end come to the over three months of darkness in our communities' We have been in darkness for a long time and we've done all within our reach to correct this problem, but it seems the management of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in Oyo State is not ready to solve the problem. This question and words of lamentation came from the residents of Adegbayi, Olode, Adekola, Gbelu, Efon-Alaye Estate, Oluwo, as well as Ogungbade and Toll-Gate, all in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State.Mr Femi Ogundeji, a landlord in Adegbayi community, told Community News that residents of the area were tired of staying in darkness which had enveloped the area for over three months without any attempt from the management of the PHCN in charge of the area to find a lasting solution to the problem.A resident of Olode community, Mrs Funke Akpara, said economic activities in the area had been paralysed due to perpetual lack of electricity in the area.In her words, 'the artisans who make use of electricity on daily basis are seriously suffering as they are affected by the lackof power in the area. For instance, many welders, barbers, electricians, carpenters, hairdressers and other people who use electricity for some economic reason only come to shop to sit down. Those who do not have generator have turned to Okada business. Please, help us beg the management of PHCN at Monatan district to find a solution to the problem.Honostly, we have complained to them on many occasions, but they kept promising that they would rectify the problem. This is over three months now without any hope in sight. I won't deceive you, we are tired of staying in darkness,' she lamented. Some house owners at Gbelu, Ogungbade and Oluwo who spoke with Community News on the issue, also appealed to Oyo State government to call the management of PHCN in the state to order.
