Published by Tribune on Mon, 31 Oct 2011

The Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has assured that the New NEPA market and the Mechanic Village being built by his administration would be available for use before the end of the year. The facilities were put in place in fulfilment of the governor's promise on assumption of office to provide a suitable working environment for artisans in the stateDr Mimiko gave the assurance of the quick delivery of the facilities in Akure recently during an inspection tour of the ongoing projects. The Mechanic Village is the initiative of the Mimiko led-government and it's being built to be a model in the country. Also billed for completion within the same period is the NEPA Market in Akure, which has about 300 lock up shops.During the inspection of the projects, the governor berated successive governments in the state for the long neglect of the mechanics, not minding their importance to the society's socio-economic life.According to him, 'despite their critical role in the transportation industry and being a major part of the economy, mechanics have continued to litter the streets where they operate with inadequate space.'For so long, we have pretended that these people don't matter whereas, they are much part of our everyday life.'If these mechanics are a very important aspect of our socio-economic life, why has government over the years pretended as if they don't exist'' the governor queried, adding that his government has created a modern mechanic villages where operators could have a conducive working environment, the fall-out of which, he said was that the village will clear mechanics off the streets.Giving details of the new Mechanic Village, the governor volunteered that 'There are compartments that would accommodate about 200 mechanics, that will be about 40 per cent of the mechanics we have in Akure metropolis and we are not stopping at that.'After finishing with the first one, we shall start work on building mechanic villages in other zones in the state capital,' he said.
