Ajegunle flood: Ikorodu residents relocate to Lagos Island

Published by Tribune on Mon, 31 Oct 2011

Aftermath the flooding of Ajegunlepart of Kosofe Local Government area of Lagos State which has made the Ikorodu road stretch impassable, some residents of Ikorodu working and doing business in the Lagos Island and Mainland have relocated.Investigations by Community News showed that since the rains intensified leading to the flooding of the Ajegunle portion of the road, commuters and motorists moving in and out of Ikorodu have been subjected to untold hardship. The Ketu ' Ikorodu which used to take 30 minutes drive now takes over one hour.On Monday when the road was first flooded, the fares to and from Ikorodu rose astronomically. Passengers were made to pay as much as N400 as against N100, while Ikorodu to Oshodi went for N600 as against N150 charged before the incident.Several motorists and commuters that spoke with Community News said apart from the cost, the relocation became imperative because they cannot afford the hassles and stress of staying in the traffic for hours.According to an Insurance broker, Mr. immnnocent Wogu, 'living in Ikorodu is gradually becoming a nightmare', stating that since the rain started, the deplorable roads had become impassable. He stated that he almost developed heartache last year when the same portion of the road was over flooded, stressing that he had to relocate to a hotel somewhere in Surulere to enable him attend work promptly.'The challenges of living in Ikorodu are increasing by the day. Imagine this flood again. I really have to relocate so that I can report to work as required by my management. I cannot withstand the stress. I did the same thing last year and it served me right,' he said.Speaking in the same light, Mrs Victoria Egede who works for a courier firm on Victoria Island, said she abandoned her husband and two kids for her cousin's place in Gbagada to avoid the rigours associated with driving through the flooded area.According to her, it has become a yearly ritual to relocate as she would not be able to meet up with her office schedules if she continued to stay in Ikorodu while the flood crisis lasted.'The luck I have is that my husband, a retiree, who runs his business in Ikorodu now takes care of the home. I now go home on weekends to attend to my family obligations. I believe in the nearest future we will abandon our house in Ikorodu and relocate to the Mainland,' she said.
