Five members of a single family who were travelling in a Mercedes Benz car all died in a fatal accident at Tamburawa bridge, 21 kilometres along the Kano-Zaria federal highway yesterday.A man who witnessed the accident told Daily Trust that the Mercedes car ran into a pothole just before the bridge, and the driver lost control and plunged into the river. Fishermen from neighbouring villages rushed to the riverside and made frantic efforts to rescue the victims even before the arrival of men of the Fire Service. They managed to retrieve the remains of a woman and a child, both of which were in a sorry state.Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp in Kano Hassan Kogari told Daily Trust that a bad road was the cause of the accident. He called on relevant authorities to repair the bad portion of the road in order to save lives. He also said the same spot at the entrance of the bridge had in the past six months claimed at least 34 lives in similar crashes. Also in Kano at the weekend, a free for all fight between gangster groups claimed 4 lives at Unguwa Uku, headquarters of Tarauni local Government.A witness told Daily Trust that the bloody clash occurred when armed group from Layin Jahannama attacked the opposite street of Layin Kuka, leading to the death a youngster. According to him, gangsters from Layin Kuka then launched a reprisal attack which resulted in the death of three persons before anti- riot policemen were drafted to the spot.Acting Kano Police PRO Umar Muhammad Auwal confirmed that there was a fight at Unguwa Uku but said the police was yet to ascertain casualty figures. He said normalcy has been restored to the area and he urged citizen to go about their legitimate duties without fear.Daily Trust further learnt that the people in Layin Kuka had gone to Kano radio on Saturday morning to demand for justice after the killing of the youngster from their area on Friday night. They said the Mai Unguwa of Layin Jahanama was not helping matters. But they did not wait for the law to take its cause as they struck at Layin Jahannama on Saturday night, killing three people. It would be recalled that Unguwa Uku, where Kano's main motor park is located, is home to hundreds of motor park touts and thugs. The area is notorious for criminal activities and gang rivalries are rife, especially at Layin Jahanama [which means Hell's Lane], a name coined by the gangs. The riot that followed last April's presidential election was particularly ferocious in the area as the gangs cashed in on the situation to loot shops and homes.
