Presidency orders NITEL to present details of liabilities, agreements

ThePresidency on Monday ordered the management of the Nigeria Telecommunication Limited to furnish the Federal Government with details of its liabilities.It also asked the telecommunications company to present the details of its partnership agreements and proposals to the government.Vice-President Namadi Sambo gave the directive at a meeting of the National Council on Privatisation, which he presided over at the State House, Abuja.Sambo said the details must be made available through PowerPoint presentation during the councils next meeting.He said that after receiving the report, the NCPs technical committee would be mandated to scrutinise it.That, he added, would form the basis upon which the committee would review and discuss the issues affecting the company.Sambo also directed the Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Ms. Bolanle Onagoruwa, to prepare a detailed report on power sector reforms in the country.Onagoruwa is expected to present the report at the National Economic Council meeting holding on November 10, 2011.The vice-president expressed concern over the deplorable condition of the Ajaokuta Steel Company and directed that the firms members of staff should be properly engaged.He also suggested that a power company could be invited to manage the companys power plant.He advised that due diligence must be observed and companies that submitted fraudulent claims should be sanctioned.Sambo said government had shares in most of the companies it sold and wanted to know how much the companies were remitting as dividends each year.He also noted that there should be proper enlightenment campaign on governments programmes and the activities of those who were sabotaging its efforts at providing social amenities to Nigerians, especially in the power sector.
