Emeteole against foreigners, picks Keshi

Published by Punch on Tue, 01 Nov 2011

Ahead of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation meeting on Tuesday, former Heartland coach Kelechi Emeteole says Nigeria will be taking several steps backward if a foreign coach is recommended to the NFF for Super Eagles job.The committee meets today to deliberate on the appointment of a new coach to replace Samson Siasia, who was sacked on Friday, as Eagles coach. Emeteole said Nigeria should believe in its own coaches, adding that only a well administered local league would breed strong national teams. He said, Since the sacking of Siasia on Friday, I have heard of many names coming up as his replacement. It is unfortunate that Siasia failed but as a nation we have to move on and ensure our football does not fall behind others. But I still believe that the job of coaching Nigeria national team belongs to a Nigerian coach. There were so many things that were wrong when Siasia was the coach and they have been there before him.I have said it several times that until we learn to run a true national league, our football will not grow. We had players who did well in foreign clubs because they were developed from our local league a long time ago. Today, players run abroad to play in unknown clubs because they suffered a lot in the hands of Nigerian clubs administrators, who owe them lots of money. One day, they will return home to play for the national team, so what do you expect from them'With Stephen Keshis name coming up as a possible Eagles coach to work with a foreign coach, Emeteole picked the former Togo coach, stressing that he had the experience to work independently.Keshi is a good Nigerian coach with proof. He has worked outside Nigeria and did well. Lets give him a chance to do it with the Eagles. He does not need a foreign coach to work with.
