Clerics lament apathy to celibacy

The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Rev. Felix Ajakaye, his predecessor, Bishop Michael Fagun, and the Superior General of Sisters of St. Michael the Archangel, Margaret Fagbamigbe, have lamented the drop in the number of young girls interested in becoming nuns.The trio said this in Ado-Ekiti on Monday at a press conference to herald the silver jubilee of SSMA in the diocese.Fagbamigbe said, One of our greatest challenges is that some families are not giving much encouragement to the girls to become religious (sisters) anymore. The society is becoming more secular.She said the sisters had been contributing immensely to the development of the country, stressing that some of their members were lecturers; doctors; nurses while others were engaged in various vocations.Fagun, who founded the SSMA 25 years ago, said there were some who entered but dropped out later when they could no longer cope with the demands.The bishop said some members feigned sickness using it as an excuse to withdraw, while some later found out that the service was not their calling because they could no longer control their sexual urge.
