2011 IBA conference begins in Dubai

The 2011 edition of the annual International Bar Association conference has started on October 30 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirate.This years edition of the conference, its first in any Middle Eastern country held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, with 636 Nigerian lawyers registered for the event.The conference, in which over 5,000 lawyers registered to participate, was formally declared open at a grand ceremony on Sunday.In his keynote address, the Minister of Justice of the UAE, Dr. Hadef Aldaheri, expressed the delight of the Emirate to be selected by the IBA to host the important conference.The President of the IBA, Akira Kawamura, said, As the largest and most universal bar association in the world, there is no better time than now for the IBA to be meeting in a region that faces much change and opportunity for the future.The IBA has a responsibility to adapt to these changing times effectively and swiftly if it is to continue to represent the global voice of the legal profession.A Nobel Laureate,diplomat and international lawyer, Dr. Mohammed Elbaradel, said the rule of law was key to effective governance, peace and stability.The opening ceremony was rounded off with a welcome party for delegates.
