DRUG traffickersmay have startedshifting their illegal activities to other airports for fear of being nabbed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officials. This became obvious on Monday when the scanning machine at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, detected two suspected drug traffickers. The suspects, during interrogation, reportedly told narcotics investigators that they were advised to the transit the Abuja Airport because of the attention on the Lagos airport over Baba Suwe, who has been under observation of the agency. The NDLEA Abuja airport commander, Alhaji Hamisu Lawan, gave the names of the suspects as Nnoli Valentine, 41 and Onyegbuna Patrick, 25.Nnoli, a Nigerian based in Berlin, Germany, allegedly ingested 99 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine weighing 1.6kg.He was arrested while attempting to board a KLM flight to Amsterdam. The second suspect, Onyegbuna Patrick, allegedly ingested 67 wraps of substances and had tested positive for cocaine weighing 1.250kg. Onyegbuna was caught returning from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The commander said the agency has scanning machines in all the international airports in the country saying: 'We are prepared to stop drug traffickers at the Abuja airport. All our airports are equally equipped with the 3D scanning machines and it was a wrong calculation by the suspects to have opted for Abuja airport. This arrest will serve as a warning that it is difficult for them to smuggle drugs here.'Meanwhile, one week to the expiration of the extra two weeks the NDLEA got from a High Court to observe the arrested Yoruba comic actor, Babatunde Omidina, (alias Baba Suwe), who was suspected to have ingested drugs, it seems the anti-narcotic agency is in a dilemma over what to do next.According to information gathered by the Nigerian Tribune, the NDLEA has been at a loss over how to handle the controversial issue if Baba Suwe does not excrete any drug at the expiration of the two weeks. The development came even as the anti-narcotic agency, through its media officer, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the agency was unruffled by the drama. The ace Yoruba actor was nabbed at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport on October 12 while attempting to travel to Paris, France, on the allegation of ingesting substances suspected to be hard drugs.Baba Suwe who has remained in NDLEA custody for three weeks had excreted many times without any trace of hard drugs found, a situation which has sparked controversy. When Nigerian Tribune spoke with the media officer of the agency on what may be the next line of action if the actor does not excrete drugs, he declined to give any information on that, saying that it was against the style of the agency to disclose information on a case that was still under investigation. He, however, waved aside the insinuation that the agency was already in a dilemma, saying the agency was not ruffled by the drama that had been unfolding since the arrest of Baba Suwe.Equally, he refused to disclose how many times Baba Suwe had excreted, saying that that formed part of the investigation which could not be released now. When the Nigerian Tribune asked if the agency had the power to seek for surgery to be performed on Baba Suwe to evacuate the suspected drugs, an official of the agency who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, though the agency had the power to do so, the agency was not envisaging that such a situation would arise in Baba Suwe's case. The NDLEA official, advised that rather than insinuating interested Nigerians should be patient and wait till the expiration of the two weeks.Except for last minute and unforseen circumstances, Baba Suwe, is scheduled to be produced today before Justice Yetunde Idowu of a Lagos High Court sitting In Ikeja.Justice Idowu had on Wednesday October 26, 2011, ordered the NDLEA to produce Baba Suwe physically in court at its next adjourned date of November 1, 2011.The court granted the order following an application for his production in court filed by his counsel, human rights lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, before the court.Aturu also sought through an application brought pursuant to Order IV Rules 3 and 4 of the Fundamental Human Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules 2009 for the unconditional release of the comedian from NDLEA custody pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.He also asked the NDLEA to show cause why Baba Suwe should not be released unconditionally from detention. However, the NDLEA through its counsel, Femi Oloruntoba, opposed the application to release Baba Suwe unconditionally through a 33-paragraph counter affidavit, where it is claimed that a series of medical examinations had been carried out since the day Baba Suwe was arrested on October 12, 2011.NDLEA added that the examination results revealed that Baba Suwe had a large amount of drugs in his stomach, adding that Baba Suwe is bound to eventually excrete the substances from his abdomen.
