Unemployment, a security issue 'Mimiko

Published by Tribune on Tue, 01 Nov 2011

The Ondo State governor, Dr OlusegunMimiko, has identified mass poverty as the greatest threat to Nigeria's sovereignty.Speaking while receiving an Achievers' Award during the 10th anniversary of the Premier FM, Ibadan at the Nustreams Conference Centre, Alalubosa, Ibadan, on Monday, Mimiko said the alarming rate and dimension which mass poverty had reached in the country had elevated it to the status of the most potent threat to the country's corporate existence.'The greatest enemy in Nigeria is mass poverty. Unemployment has become a security issue. Tackling unemployment is, therefore, the greatest challenge of our generation,' the governor said, while promising that the rate of unemployment in Ondo State would drop to zero per cent in the next few years.According to the Ondo governor, the challenge of governance of the country's current leadership is not only to benchmark progress for Nigeria's development but for the entire African continent. In this regard, he observed that the Ondo State government's Abiye health programme, among others, had already become a global brand. While thanking the management of the Premier FM station for the honour done to him by giving him an achiever's award, Mimiko said, 'we are ready to partner with the Premier FM in any way that will add value to what they are doing.'Also, while delivering the anniversary lecture of the FM station earlier on the occasion, the governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, represented by the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Honourable Funminiyi Afuye, took a look at the current prevailing insecurity in the country, declaring that Nigeria could only chart a way out of its socio-economic woes when democratic politics, federalism and justice become integral parts of its political system.Speaking on the topic 'Peace as Panacea for National Development, Fayemi said: 'Today, our country faces certain challenges that continue to breed instability and socio-political chaos.'For instance, the current formula for revenue sharing is 52 per cent for the Federal Government, 26.7 per cent for states and 20.60 per cent for local governments. This is against the spirit of federalism.
