Published by Tribune on Tue, 01 Nov 2011

A group of Northern Christians in Kaduna, on Monday accused the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, for betraying the adherents of the religion by his support for the plans by the Federal Government to remove the subsidy on petroleum products. The Christians, under the aegis of Concerned Christians in the North, at a news conference, said it was unthinkable that a religious leader of Oritsejafor's calibre, could throw his weight behind such an insensitive and ill-timed plan by the government. They contended that the planned withdrawal of fuel subsidy by the government would aggravate the suffering of the ordinary Nigerians.Spokesman of the group, Yahuda Peter Marsa, said Christians in the North were concerned by CAN president's endorsement of the government's plan, which had drawn condemnations from different sectors of the country.Marsa stated that the national leadership of CAN failed to take into consideration the reality of the situation of things in Nigeria, before endorsing the planned removal of fuel subsidy. The group's spokesman said 'from their dispositions and body language, the CAN president is using the umbrella body of Christians in charting a different aspiration from what we used to know of the organisation.'On many occasions, Christians in Nigeria and beyond have been embarrassed by his (Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor) take on several national issues.
