Group threatens mass mobilisation to NASS 'Over proposed amendment to EFCC Act

Published by Tribune on Tue, 01 Nov 2011

A non-governmental organisation,Anti-Corruption League, in Abuja, on Monday, threatened to mobilise Nigerians against the proposed amendment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act by the House of Representatives. The group, while speaking with journalists in Abuja, cautioned the House of Representatives against the planned amendment, saying that it was dangerous, myopic and a calculated plan to blackmail the EFCC chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri. It added that the move by the legislators would serve no use to the public interest, while it also asked the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to clarify whether or not it sold the official residence of the speaker of the House of Representatives, which was recently renovated at the cost of about N600 million.Spokespersons of the group, Dino Melaye and Independence Ogunewe, condemned what they described as attempts to blackmail the EFCC leadership and weaken her office. The former members of the House of Representatives threatened to mobilise Nigerians and the civil society against the planned amendment, stressing that the only sure way to improve on the capacity of anti-graft agencies to deliver on their mandate was not to target their leadership, but to fortify their capacities to curb corruption. They added that seeking that retired Supreme Court or Court of Appeal justices to chair the EFCC would make the agency less active.
