Thuggery: Abule Egba, Super, others seek protection

Published by Tribune on Tue, 01 Nov 2011

RESIDENTS of Abule Egba, Super and Ile-Epo, all on the outskirts of Lagos, have called on the state government to find a lasting solution to the problems created by the recent local government elections in the area, as the residents now sleep with all their eyes opened. The communities have been witnessing social unrest since the local government election was held. The problem started a day after the election when some thugs discovered that the results of the elections were not going to be in favour of their candidate. The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) had annouced the candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as the winner, and that did not go down well with some people who felt that the candidate of People Democratic Party (PDP) for Agbado Oke- Odo Local Council Development area, carried the day.Residents also lamented that the policemen drafted to calm down tension in the area had not helped matters, as they turned the assignment into goldmine, exorting money from motorists and passers-by.Some of the residents who spoke to Community News on condition of anonymity, lamented that things had not been easy for them since. "Is it a curse to have the council headquarters located in one area. We have not known peace since the problem started. There have been cases of gun shots from combatants. We call on the state government to find lasting solutions to the problem."Also, traders in the areas have been complaining of losing their wares to political thugs who have been hiding under the situation to loot and carry away items. "We have decided to close our shops until they are able to find a lasting solution. I have lost goods worth N50,000 (fifty thousand naira) to the unrest. The thugs just stormed my shop and carted away my wares," a trader told Community News.
