Lagos: Religious crisis looms at council authorities

ISOKAN-OLA community in Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Area of Lagos State may be in for crisis following the decision of members of the Muslim community in the area to erect a mosque on a major street, thus blocking the said street.The Community Development Association CDA for the area in an attempt to prevent a breakdown of law and order has called on the Lagos state Ministry of Environment to inspect the site to determine the true position of things.A spokeman of the community who sought anonymity, stated that the elders in the area did not want a religious war, hence they decided to invite the state government to inspect the area. He told Community News that the Muslims in the area had initially blocked the street with planks and that the people protested, and it was agreed that it would be a temporary thing."We complained when they first blocked the road to erect a wooden structure as mosque, but we were surprised to see them erecting a standard mosque with blocks. We felt we should complain, because, it would prevent people from moving freely in the area.'But the representative of the Muslim Community explained that the land owners (omo-onile) gave them the parcel of the land to build a mosque and that those complaining had tried on several occasions to stop the erection without success."We got the land from the rightful owners. We are not disturbed by their effort to stop us."
