Monarch wants greater understanding on proposed fuel subsidy removal

Published by Guardian on Tue, 01 Nov 2011

AS controversy of the desirability of the removal of oil subsidy lingers, a major stakeholder in the downstream sector of the country's petroleum industry, Oba Enitiolorunda Obateru Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugbo-Ilaje, has called on the government to increase its enlightenment campaign on the subject so that its intention will not be misunderstood. The Ilaje monarch whose kingdom is the only oil-producing in the South West geo-political zone, and who as an oil magnate, owns the largest oil storage depot in Africa, told The Guardian at his Ode-Ugbo palace during the weekend, that all the cards must be put on the table before Nigerians can understand the intentions of government. He also called on Nigerians, who are against the proposal to exercise restraints and remain calm while awaiting the release of government's guidelines, which he said, would throw more light on the subject. The boss of Obat Petroleum advised that stakeholders should reserve comments on the issue since it was still a proposal instead of making comments that could create tension or cause crisis that may affect the economy of the country. The monarch stated this in his traditional palace at Ode-Ugbo, the ancestral home of the Ugbo-Ilajes while taking journalists round his multi-billion naira modern palace and five-star hotel under construction in the ancient town.
