Lagos to audit high-rise buildings

THE Lagos State government yesterday disclosed that it would soon constitute a body that would inspect all high-rise buildings in the state.The Commissionerfor Physical Planning and Urban Development, Toyin Ayinde, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said that only government-approved experts would henceforth be allowed to build high-rise buildings in the state to check use of sub-standard materials.The commissioner said that the collapse of asix-storey building in Maryland, Lagos,last week came as ashock to the state government.His words: 'The collapse of that building is a shock because of the solid appearance the building presented outwardly.'This indicated that only building experts should execute building constructions, no more room for amateurs and quacks.'It means that the materials used in the construction were grossly inadequate'.According to Ayinde, the state would also ensure that soil test experts dothorough jobs before building construction begins.NAN reports that more than 10companies, including the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN),were occupying the six-storey building before it collapsed.
