Farm employee's whereabouts generate controversy

Published by Punch on Wed, 02 Nov 2011

Where could 34-year-old Segun Akinleye have been since September 27, 2011, when he left his home for his place of work at Fairship Farm on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway but never returned home since then' This is the question on the lips of Seguns family members and friends, which nobody has yet to provide an answer to. Akinleye, a graduate of Animal Health and Production of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was employed sometimes in September 2010 to manage the operations of the farm in Ibafo area of the state. His younger brother, Kayode, told PUNCH METRO that the family members were not happy about the way the farm owner, Mrs Olayide Okesanjo, is handling the disappearance of his employee."Okesanjo called to inform Akinleyes referee around 9pm on September 28 that he did not come to the farm. Segun leads a tripartite way of life; from the farm to his house, from his house to the church all on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway," Kayode said.He said immediately Akinleyes siblings knew about his disappearance, they repeatedly called his telephone line but it was switched off.Kayode said after making concerted efforts to locate him, the family reported the incident at the Ibafo Divisional Police Station. He said as part of the police investigation, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nicholas Nkemdeme, ordered that Okesanjos home in Abeokuta be searched on October 12.PUNCH METRO learnt that when the search was conducted, nothing incriminating was found on the premises. Akinleyes brother-in-law, Mr. Afolabi Rasheed, said his logs revealed that his phone was active on September 29 as it received a text message around 9:48 am. Attempts by our correspondent to get Okesanjo to speak on the issue proved abortive as she did not pick up her phone. Also, text messages sent to her were not responded to.Besides, when our correspondent visited the farm on Wednesday, Okesanjo was not available. A guard, who identified himself simply as Mohammed told our correspondent that she had been away from the farm for days.It was gathered that Akinleye and Mohammed were the only workers on the farm. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident and said investigation was ongoing.Adejobi said the case was at a point transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Abeokuta, but is now being handled by the Ibafo Police Division on the orders of Nkemdeme. The PPRO said, "We have been able to get some call logs that will give us some leads into the situation."I can assure you that the police will follow up all possible leads and exhaust the possibilities of getting to the root of the matter. We are working round the clock to find Akinleye as we believe that he is alive."He added that the police had made Okesanjo realise that the search for Akinleye was a collective responsibility and as such she should give all possible information needed by the police.
