Sallah: Lagos distributes free trash bags

Lagos State Government has started distributing free trash bags to residents in the state for storage of extra waste that will be generated during Sallah. The Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ola Oresanya, said this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the agencys plans for the Eld-el-Kabir. He explained that there would be effective services within its six regions during the celebration, adding that the 350 Private Sector Participant operators in the state had started distributing the trash bags. Oresanya said, "Lagosians are advised not to dump their waste indiscriminately on the road medians and verges during the celebration. Assigned PSP operators will be moving round to clear refuse in their areas. "Officials from the agency and vehicles have also been deployed to ensure adequate back-up for the PSP operators." According to him, other members of staff of the agency, not on back-up duty, have been mandated to monitor their vicinity and report activities of the PSP operators, adding that sanctions will be applied on errant perators. He said the law banning cart pushers in the state was still in force. "The state government has been magnanimous enough to offer employment to over 200 cart pushers. But few recalcitrant ones are yet to conform. These cart pushers are responsible for most of the illegal dumping of waste in the canals and road medians which results into flooding," Oresanya said.
