Inspector Usman Dimka is a rare breed policeman. Although he works in Ibadan, Oyo State, his philanthropic gestures took him to Edo State, where be bagged an award and spoke with Uchechukwu Olisah.IN a country where the police are held with odium, one policeman commands admiration. In a society where courage is rare, one policeman has it in abundance. In a clime where some policemen extort and even kill for as little as N20, one policeman has earned the enviable reputation of a philanthropist. Who is this policeman' How has he brought honours to himself and to the Nigeria Police' And how is he ensuring a better Nigeria.Inspector Usman Dimka is currently the Commander, Skynet Special Squad, a Commissioner of Police Special Squad with 63 men, in Oyo State. Before now, the police officer from Kabwir in Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State had served in Edo and Delta States where his professional exploits and philanthropic gestures stood him out, as well as earned him recognition and awards.The latest of these honours which came the way of Inspector Usman Dimka is courtesy of the Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering Students (NIBES), University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) chapter. It is an award for humanitarian services, which the students, led by their president, Eni Blessing Ishioma, presented to Inpector Dimka for his uncommon generousity. The occasion was the launch of the Biomedical Electronics Magazine and award ceremony of the NIBES which took place at the weekend at Akenzua II Complex, UBTH, Benin City.Speaking shortly after receiving the award, Inspector Usman Dimka said, 'I am very grateful for this honour. It is the first time in my experience that students will honour a police officer'. Living up to his reputation as a professional, Dimka did not allow the euphoria of the award to becloud his sense of responsibility, as he advised the students to be law abiding and to avoid being lured into immoral acts and other misdemeanours.Besides, as usual with him, the Plateau State-born police officer embarked on an image laundering service for the police. 'Nigeria Police is now refined. As you are aware, graduates now join the police. I pray you join us so that we join hands together to make Nigeria a better place'.Indeed, the students who honoured Dimka for his humanitarian service also got a taste of his philanthropic pudding when he launched the Biomedical Electronics Magazine, the official publication of the students of School of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, UBTH, with N50,000. This gesture drew thunderous applause from the gathering, with some of the students saying it is the very first time they were seeing a policeman with a difference as 'it is not easy for a policeman to give out'.In 2001-2002, as orderly to the then Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Zone 5, with headquarters in Benin City, Alhaji Raimi Odofin, Inspector Dimka had exhibited great philanthropic gesture not so known of policemen in the country. He had bought a wheel chair for a physically-challenged girl, Dozie Arabamen. From then on his philanthropic exploits have known no bounds.In Delta State, where Dimka served as Commander of the Commissioner of Police Special Squad, it was reported that with the support of members of his crack team, he was able to reduce crime significant in. Besides, he is reputed to have assisted in bringing peace among youths in Delta state through financial assistance in the area of education and the provision of professional advice on conflict resolution, efforts that earned him an award on 24 March, 2007.As a matter of fact, the Delta Music Merit Award was presented to Inspector Usman Dimka (Inspector 31 Police Mobile Force PMF and MOPOL Crack Team Commander), Ogwashi-Ukwu, in recognition of his excellent performance and strides towards promoting peace in Delta State. The award was described as an honour to him for being a role model to youths in the state by Performing Artistes Association of Delta State in conjunction with Delta State Tourism Board, Asaba.Similarly, Dimka bought a wheel chair and presented it to a physically-challenged person, Halima Sani, in Jos in 2007, just as he sent her back to school and is still paying her school fees.Following these generousities as well as professionalism credited to Dimka, he was promoted from Sergeant to Inspector under a special promotion exercise by the then Inspector General (IG) of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, in 2007. It was from this point that he was made the Escort Commander to the Governor of Delta State. He also performed credibly in this new assignment and the governor recommended him to the then IG, Mr. Mike Okiro, for promotion to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). This recommendation which had since been accepted and forwarded to the Police Service Commission in 2009 is still awaiting further action.In Oyo State, where he is currently serving, Inspector Dimka donated wheel chairs to about three physically-challenged persons and sent one of them back to school, taking full responsibility for his education. He also renovated a police post and built and equipped a police lecture hall at Aleshinloye market in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
