Jonathan, OBJ charge military

PRESIDENTGoodluckJonathan has charged the military to intensify efforts in the area of research and increase the frontiers of their knowledge.The president, who spoke at the 'SAPPERS' Re-union 2011, held in Makurdi, Benue State, noted that military engineers should not restrict their responsibilities to building only during the war, but also to always get the technicals done.While acknowledging their roles in nation building, the president, who was represented by the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Bello Mohammed, however, charged them to strive hard to contribute to the transformation agenda of his administration through infrastructural development such as housing, power and ICT.He expressed optimism that if Nigeria was to make any breakthrough to the moon, it should be from the military.The president lauded the officers for their expertise and quick response to security challenges facing the country and further charged them to always live up to expectation in their role of defending the nation.Speaking earlier, the Benue State governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam, who was represented by his deputy, Chief Stephen Lawani, said that the military should also be involved in agriculture.While acknowledging their contributions to the peace in the state, Governor Suswam further charged them to continue to emphasise on professionalism. This, according to him, would make them the vanguard for the sustenance of democracy.Also speaking at the event, former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, submitted that corruption and policy sommersault were the bane of the development in Nigeria.The former president went down the memory lane to hint that the N2billion he appropriated for the resuscitation of the NIDC in Kaduna, where arms could be manufactured, during his administration, was abandoned and preferred to expend N9billion to import arms 'all is because of their commission.
