NHIS is a failure 'Reps

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, declared that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) initiated six years ago during former President Olusegun Obasanjo' administration had failed to live up to the expectations of Nigerians, describing the scheme as 'a national embarrassment, disaster and colossal failure.'Consequently, the House has mandated its Committee on Health to investigate the haphazard implementation of the scheme since inception with a view to making it more functional and accessible to Nigerians.The decision to probe the scheme was sequel to a motion moved by Honourable Rasaq Bello-Osagie and 47 others entitled: 'Investigation into the activities of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).'Leading the debate on the motion on behalf of others, Honourable Bello-Osagie noted that it was sad to observe that six years after the establishment of the NHIS, it had achieved nothing, stressing that 'people who should have no business in the scheme have taken the centre stage.
