Women, students back Ondo candidate for NDDC board

Published by Tribune on Wed, 02 Nov 2011

Women groups and students of tertiary institutions from the oil producing area of Ondo State, have supported the nomination of Mr. Oladele Omogbemi as the state representative on the governing council of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).The students, under the aegis of Ondo State Oil Producing Communities Students Association (OSOPCSA) said they were solidly behind the nomination of Mr Omogbemi as the state representative on the board of the commissionThey warned those behind a recent publication that Ilaje Constituency I was not the only constituency producing oil in the state, stressing that such act can cause disunity between the two constituencies. The association, in a statement issued by its President, Mr. Akindunjoye Olasemore, said it had no objection to the nomination since it was done in accordance with the tradition of the land.He said Ilaje Constituency I which comprises four kingdoms -- Odo-Nla, Obe-Nla, Obe-Ogbaro and Ugbo-- was the only constituency that produced oil in the state and it should be allowed to present the candidate for the NDDC job.According to him, the entire students in the four kingdoms in the constituency were determined and prepared to ensure that nothing obstructed the nomination of Omogbemi since he hailed from one of the kingdoms in the oil rich region. Also, the Ondo State chapter of Niger Delta Women Association (NDWA) has appealed to all the sons and daughters of Ilaje local government to support the candidature of Mr. Omogbemi and desist from any act that can delay his confirmation. The association's spokesperson, Princess Enimola Iwalewa, said all the women in the oil producing area of the state had endorsed the state nominee whom she said had all it entailed to represent the state on the NDDC board. They, however, commended the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, for recommending a credible and trustworthy person to represent them. The associations therefore, called on the National Assembly to wave any protest letter or petition against the nominee as they did not represent the interest of the people in the region.
