Levy yourselves to repair roads, bishop urges Christians in Edo

Published by Tribune on Wed, 02 Nov 2011

THE Bishop of the Anglican Church, Sabongidda-Ora, Professor John Akao, has urged christians in Owan West and East local government areas of Edo State, to levy themselves to repair roads leading to both councils.Akoa said this in Sabongidda-Ora, Edo, on Sunday during the funeral service held in honour of Madam Mabel Alufokhai, mother of Prof. Ewan Alufokhai. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Alufokhai was the former Acting Vice-Chancellor and former Provost of the College of Medicine, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo.'It has come to the point where all christians have to come together and deliberate on how to levy ourselves to fix the deplorable state of the roads leading to the two local governments.'When that is done, we would take it upon ourselves to make two arks and put at the exit of Iruekpen and the other at the exit of Auchi and make sure that only cars and buses ply the roads,' he said.He expressed regrets that residents of the two local councils had been alienated by successive administrations in the state.Akoa said the deplorable condition of the road had brought untold hardship to residents of the two local governments.Illustrating the agony the people had been contended with in recent times, the cleric said people travelling from the two councils must go through other local governments to reach Benin, the Edo State capital.'I had to go through Auchi ' Ewu ' Irrua ' Ekpoma ' Iruekpen to Benin, whereas, I was supposed to go through Iruekpen to Benin,' he said.He said anybody passing through Iruekpen-Sabongidda-ora road would not witness government presence. The clergyman, however, thanked God for enabling the deceased to spend 93 years on earth even when life expectancy in the country had been hovering between 40 and 50 years. He commended the Alufokhai family for the care and support they gave to their mother during her life time, noting that 'God was so magnanimous to her during her life time.
