Awesome Praise storms Lagos

Published by Guardian on Wed, 02 Nov 2011

AN international Gospel concert, Awesome Praise will hold at Freedom Park, Lagos on November 11, 2011. The package, which originates from the UK with the primary aim of giving praises to God, according to its curator, Olawale Opayinka, is a non-religious event, but laced with spiritual uplifting doses. With Remembering Our Freedom as theme, the concert will also highlight the campaign against physical abuse of women, while marking the global Remembrance Day, which commemorates and remembers those who have given their lives in past World wars and Africans who have served and continue to serve for World peace.Although the concert is coming to Nigeria for the first time, it has been staged in London twice ' Barbican (2002) and Ocean Music Venue (2003) before it was hosted in Washington DC (Kennedy Centre in July 2004. The last edition took place in Johanesburg, South Africa, on November 11, 2007.The Lagos outing will feature artistes and choirs from Nigeria and other nations including the Mira Opalinska International Quartet (Poland); the gifted soloist Gena West (Ghana); and exuberant mass choir of 250 strong Healing Streams of God - Daystar Choir, Lagos.Nigerian gospel artists and musicians expected to perform include Blaise, Eben, Midnight Crew, Tim Godfrey, Tosin Alao, Dupe Olulana, and Panam Percy Paul among others. Popular actress, Kate Henshaw will compere the show.Previous editions of Awesome Praise, Opayinka said, had been used to promote the work of Emerging Economies Education (3E) Foundation based in the UK, which he created to enable him championing the cause of women. The foundation is also saddled with promoting the love of Mathematics and the Actuarial discipline to developing African countries. He also sees actuaries to be at the forefront of globalisation and believes they can have a huge impact on large-scale economies. He explains that actuaries assess and monitor the likely financial impact of tomorrow's uncertain events so that individuals and businesses alike can safeguard their future, confidently and at a fair price, in an ever-changing and unpredictable world. They design solutions to problems that involve financial risk or future uncertainty.Opayinka also believes that the actuarial profession can help Africa claw its way out of Third World poverty by helping create financial markets worth millions and tackling HIV/AIDS through its demographic analysis.
