Dolphins beat 3SC, go joint top

Published by Punch on Fri, 04 Nov 2011

Dolphins went joint top of the Nigeria Premier League on Wednesday after a 1-0 victory over Shooting Stars of Ibadan at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt.Dolphins were without injured team captain Emah Godwin, left-back Mutiu Adegoke and striker Emma Nwachi. Despite the absence of the players, the Port Harcourt side put up pressure from the start but their strikers wasted chances. Excellent goalkeeping by 3SCs Segun Oluwaniyi however kept the Oluyole Warriors in the game. They came close to breaking the deadlock in the 32nd minute when Victor Michaels deft header off a Kennedy Chinwo free kick clattered off the post. However, the visitors backline continued to remain impregnable until 15 minutes from the end when Oluwaniyi failed to deal with a routine save. The predatory Michael pounced and scored the simplest goal of his life. "We were nervous when we kept missing all the chances we were creating but we kept fighting and we thank God for the victory," Michael told SuperSport.com after the game.3SC coach, Fatai Amoo praised Dolphins for their performance. "They are a great side and it is a straight fight between them and Sunshine Stars for who will be champions at the end of the season," he said.Dolphins are now joint top of the NPL with 67 points from 36 games.
