N'Delta group warns oil firms

THE Niger Delta Indigenous Movement for Radical Change on Thursday warned oil companies operating in the area against flouting the recently passed Local Content Act.The group also commended Shell Petroleum Development Company for recently awarding a N7.8bn contract to a Nigerian firm, but vowed to "visit hostility on oil majors who are not ready to obey the Act."The group which has had a running battle with SPDC, over the companys alleged subversion of the law which seeks to encourage Nigerians to participate in the oil industry, hailed the award of the contract to a Nigerian firm.The oil exploration monitoring group further lauded the recent award of the Amukpe-Escravos Pipeline project to FENOG Nigeria Limited by Pan Ocean Oil Corporation.In a statement by its President, Nelly Emma, John Sailor (Secretary); and Mukoro Stanley (spokesman), the group said the award of the contract by Shell to a Nigerian firm would boost the confidence of Nigerians operating in the sector.It added, "The region will be a peaceful place if local contractors are encouraged by oil majors rather than foreign firms such as O.P.I., Saipem, Daewoo and others."
