Poverty alleviation: Lawmaker presents motorcycles

Afederal lawmaker, Hon. Yakub Abiodun Balogun, has presented 11 motorcycles to people of his constituency in Lagos Island as part of efforts to alleviate poverty.He also gave out N500,000 to 10 other persons, saying that the scheme would continue as long as he remained a member of the House of Representatives.Earlier, Balogun had paid 20 elderly people in the constituency, the sum of 50,000 for a period of six months, while six mini-buses were procured for the use of school children on the Island for free.Distributing the motorcycles to the beneficiaries for commercial purpose at Andrew Street on the Island, Balogun told newsmen that the gesture was part of his plans to ensure that poverty was alleviated in the area.According to him, there is no better way to reward loyal party members and well wishers than giving to them the dividends of democracy.He said that the gesture would be done every quarter, adding that another 20 people would soon benefit from the cash meant for recharge card business.He said, 'the beneficiaries were before now jobless and constituted great threat to peace; they were not working but now, I thank their patience and perseverance and thank God for their positions and support during our electioneering campaign.He, however, enjoined them to utilise the opportunities offered by the gestures for the goodness of God and humanity, promised them more of it.One of the N50, 000 beneficiaries, Mrs. Shukurat Alewe who spoke with our correspondent was full of appreciation to Hon. Balogun for the gift which, saying that the fund would go a long way to solve her family problems.
