Sallah: Passengers want security beefed up on roads

Published by Tribune on Fri, 04 Nov 2011

AS Eid-el-Kabirfestival draws near, commercial drivers plying Iseyin, Saki and other towns in the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, have called for more security and proper surveillance on the ever busy roads. Some drivers at Sango and Ojoo garages in Ibadan who ply the road on daily basis, told Community News that there was the need for the Oyo State Police Command to step up security on the Ibadan-Iseyin road as well as send more policemen to Iseyin-Saki roads to prevent criminals and armed robbers from operating freely on the road. When the commercial drivers were asked why they were making this call, Mr Taju Akeju, a driver at Ojoo Garage, told Community News that the call became imperative 'because experience has shown that armed robbers always increase their activities on this road whenever festive periods like Ileya, christmas and new year approach.According to Tunji Adelebu, another commercial driver plying Otu, Saki and Ago-Are, all in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, the Fulani Cattle herdsmen who often combine robbery with their profession always target commercial drivers and passengers plying the road during festive periods.According to him, 'we know why we are shouting and calling for more policemen on the road. We know what we are saying and anybody that is from Oke-Ogun or who travels on the road would appreciate the call at this time of the year.'This is the time of the year that you will be hearing of regular robbery on the road. We don't want to be caught unawares, and that is why we are calling on the state police command to beef up security on the roads' he stated. For Mama Bayo(as she preffered to be called), a passanger met at Sango garage, who told Community News that she travelled on Ibadan-Saki road three times a week, 'December is approaching, and most especially as Ileya festival is approaching, the state government should intensify security on the road.'The state government, she said, should direct the State Police Commissioner to instruct police officers to maintain security on the road.
