Harmattan: Second-hand sweaters boom in Kano

As the harmattan season sets in, the residents of Kano now patronise the famous Kofar Wambai market in large numbers to purchase fairly-used sweaters, jackets and blankets, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.The traders, said they started selling such materials, because most people preferred to make early purchase ahead of the critical harmattan.A dealer, Malam Muhammad Jabir, said that indications were that the weather would be harsh especially on children.He said it was necessary for parents to prepare their children for the climate, especially in November and December.According to him: ``I open about two bales of sweaters a day, although I usually sell to retailers who also make some profits as well.'A female dealer, Hajiya Mariya Sale, said her customers now demanded for second hand blankets and sweaters, saying that such products had a higher quality than new ones.'All these present-day sweaters are only fit for one season and they become stale and pale before the next season which I, as a home manager, consider a waste, and I wouldn't want other people to waste their money as well."Another dealer in such clothes, Malam Yahuza Aminu, said that he recorded high sales when the weather changed, adding that he had stopped all other business activities.
