TAFIDA AND NIGERIANS IN UK PRISONS

WHILE speaking with journalists at the Nigerian carnival award dinner in London recently, Nigerian High commissioner to the UK, Dr Dalhatu Sarki Tafida, said about 500 Nigerians were languishing in prisons in the UK for various offences ranging from immigration issues to criminal activities.DR Tafida was actually gloating. When he was appointed he said there were over 1000 Nigerians in prison in the UK. It is not easy to fathom what Dr Tafida did to cut this number into a sharp half just when Britain is toying with the idea of sending Nigerian prisoners in the UK home to come and complete their terms as the cost of feeding them behind bars is gradually becoming prohibitive.DR Tafida says it is easier to live in Nigeria without a job than to live in the UK without a job. He may be right but the Nigerian youth thinks differently. It is better to be a prisoner in the UK than to be a free man at home.
