800 students feature in 2011 Scrabbulympics championship

AFTER the success of the maiden edition in 2010, this year's Scrabbulympics Championship witnessed a large turn out with 800 students from 100 schools took part in the competition.With winner expected to go home with a brand new bus, 21 teams slugged it out in the final while the organisers have assured of a better event come 2012.The four-day championship was sponsored by Fryda Nigeria with the aim of encouraging students to improve on their vocabulary.According to the organisers, 'Since the very early years of Nigeria's Independence, sports has been the biggest singular factor that has consistently offered Nigerians the opportunity to manifest a sense of national unity and pride. Government, corporate organisations and individuals have continually concentrated efforts in the development and upgrading of various sporting events. In Nigeria, sports like football, polo, golf, tennis, handball, boxing, athletics, table tennis already enjoyed huge corporate and government involvements.'They added, 'Scrabbulympics is a scrabble tournament organized by Fryda Nigeria Limited as tactical developmental tool for secondary school students. It further brings to bear the concept of edutainment as it facilitates character building, intellectual stimulation, analytical skills, vocabulary development, sportsmanship and the needed reorientation in our teenagers.
