Taraba Gov, Adamawa Senator protest over Numan-Jalingo road

Published by The Nation on Sat, 17 Oct 2020

By Onimisi Alao, YolaTaraba Governor Darius Ishaku and Senator Binos Yeroe of Adamawa South have joined residents of Taraba and Adamawa in a protest march against deplorable condition of the Numan-Jalingo Road. The 104-km Numan-Jalingo road is a Federal Highway stretching from Numan, a major town in the southern part of Adamawa State and running through to Jalingo, the capital of Taraba. It has been in a deplorable condition after contractors abandoned rehabilitation work on it.In a documentary on the road presented to newsmen in Yola under the #Fix_Numan_Jalingo_Road campaign, Ishaku and Binos condemned the condition of the road and called on the Federal Government to speed up efforts to fix it.Contract for the highway was awarded in July 2017 at N11 billion to Deux Project Ltd and scheduled for completion in 20 months. But more than three years after, only about three kilometres of the road has been rehabilitated.Binos, who spoke extensively in the documentary and was at its presentation to newsmen Friday evening in Yola, said: It is clear from our findings that while the contractor is financially and technically incompetent, the Federal Government itself has not been forthcoming with financial mobilisation and these things must be rectified and all necessary moves made to get this project completed.Read Also:BREAKING: #EndSARS protesters block Abuja-Keffi roadIn the documentary produced by Quest Media Ltd, Ishaku lamented the sorry state of the road and called for immediate remedy. He said: The deplorable nature of the road affects the economic life of our people, as even our farmers find it difficult to move their produce. Many users of the road as well as residents of Adamawa and Taraba, who spoke in the documentary, stressed the road has become a death trap needs to be fixed without further delay.Binos, who fielded questions after screening of the documentary, asked the Federal Government to collaborate with State governments willing to rehabilitate federal roads so that there would not be issues around funding. He also urged the Ministers of work to travel always by roads rather than fly so that they can appreciate the sorry state of most Federal roads. He said he had submitted the documentary to relevant bodies, including the committees overseeing road infrastructure in the the Senate and House of Representatives. It is my hope that by watching the TV documrntary and seeing how people suffer on this road, these people will be moved to do something to correct the situation, he said.
