Martinez backs Moses for Nigeria

Published by Punch on Sun, 06 Nov 2011

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is happy to back Victor Moses 100% if he takes up an offer to play for Nigeria.Moses, who has represented England at Under-21 level, has received clearance from FIFA to represent the country of his birth and was selected for this months friendlies against Botswana and Zambia.Although the 20-year-old has not told Martinez whether he will fulfil the obligation, having gone through the administrative process, it would seem strange if the former Crystal Palace man declined. And, despite the obvious travelling issues representing Nigeria would bring for one of his key men, Martinez would endorse such a move.I just want the player to be happy, he said.If it is in Victors head to play for Nigeria, I will support him 100%.He is a player who has improved massively over the last 12 months but he has another level to go.You dont get players like Victor in modern football. He relies on his individual talent, is exciting to watch and phenomenal in one-on-one situations. That is good for any team.As long as he is happy, I will be happy. One plus point for Wigan is that Nigeria failed to qualify for the African Nations Cup for the first time since 1998, so he will not be spending two months away from the club in mid-season, as looks likely to be the case with Mohamed Diame, who is expected to be picked for Senegal. And, with a vital Premier League trip to Wolves looming on Sunday, Martinez feels Moses has other matters to occupy his mind at the moment. When we are in a desperate need of points, individual situations are not important, he said. All Victors concentrations are on getting three points on Sunday, everything else is in the background.
