U.N. Rights Chief Faults U.S. Law Enforcement After Ferguson Grand Jury

GENEVA (Reuters) - U.S. authorities should review how race-related issues affect law enforcement and justice to tackle a "deep and festering" mistrust in some sectors of the population, U.N. human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said in a statement on Tuesday.Zeid said he could not comment on whether a grand jury's acquittal of a white police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager conformed with international human rights law because he did not have all the details."Nevertheless, I am deeply concerned at the disproportionate number of young African Americans who die in encounters with police officers, as well as the disproportionate number of African Americans in U.S. prisons and the disproportionate number of African Americans on Death Row," he said.(Reporting by Tom Miles; Editing by Alison Williams)Join the conversation about this story
