Don't Be Distracted, Bishop Warns Obi

Says Labour Action PoliticalGOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State has been urged to be careful of orchestrated actions aimed at distracting the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-led government from focusing on people-orientated projects.Giving this word of caution yesterday, Methodist Bishop, Diocese of Onitsha, Rt Rev Sunday Eze, said the governor deserves the support of the people in 'this trying period' of his administration, even as he pledged the support of his church to the Anambra State Government.Bishop Eze's statement re-echoes the position of the Anambra State Council that had been mediating in the wage disagreement between the State Government and the organised labour and which had, twice, criticised the strike action embarked upon by the workers as an act of bad faith done 'without exhausting avenues of negotiation.'Rev Eze said it was beyond doubt that through transparency and frugality in governance, the Obi administration had recorded even development in almost every sector of socio-economic life. He compared the turbulence the regime was passing through to the experience of Christ who was crucified by those for whom he wrought many miracles.'We do appreciate the turbulent time you are passing through, even when you are trying your best, in the hands of the civil servants, medical personnel and others. Take solace from what happened to Christ. Those who shouted 'Hosanna' on the triumphant day were the same people who also shouted crucify him the following week', the cleric wrote in a letter of solidarity to the Governor.Alluding to increasing concerns that the strike action was politically motivated, the Bishop counseled the Governor not to be distracted from his good works. 'Whether this is politically motivated, or not, do not swerve from the right path. All these manipulations and political maneuvres will certainly settle down,' he said.'Your administration has worked. If Nigeria has people like you in most of our states of the Federation, Nigeria would have developed. Be assured of the sincere prayers of the people of God. We do not doubt your integrity. People of goodwill are solidly behind you. May God continue to keep you and your dear family', the religious leader concluded.
