Once high-flying companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buzzfeed-news-begins-furloughs-negotiates-over-potential-layoffs-2020-5">BuzzFeed</a>, Vice Media, and Group Nine variously cut pay, laid off staffers, and rewrote expectations as advertisers slashed marketing budgets as much as 50%.</p><p>The period was a particularly tough test for BuzzFeed, a heavily funded digital media company that made an ambitious but costly bet on news, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buzzfeed-faces-its-ultimate-test-as-the-coronavirus-slams-media-2020-4">with a newsroom that reached 300 people</a>.</p><p>Earlier, venture-backed media companies ran into trouble when the Facebook traffic they relied on was cut back and advertisers spent more of their budgets with Google and Facebook.</p><p>The media outlets branched out to revenue streams <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huffpost-asking-readers-to-support-journalism-in-membership-program-2019-4">like subscriptions</a>, events, and e-commerce when advertising failed to bring in enough revenue to justify their hefty valuations, but those efforts were only partially successful.</p><p>Media companies have already begun consolidating. In the latter half of 2019, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vice-media-acquires-refinery29-as-media-consolidation-continues-2019-10">Vice Media agreed to acquire Refinery29 for mostly stock</a>. Group Nine acquired PopSugar, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-the-benefits-of-vox-media-buying-new-york-magazine-2019-9">Vox Media acquired New York Media</a>.</p><p>"We're going through a period that's unprecedented; we don't know how it's going to end," Eric Hippeau, a partner at Lerer Hippeau Ventures, whose portfolio includes Axios, BuzzFeed, and Group Nine, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investors-give-advice-to-digital-media-to-survive-coronavirus-2020-4">said earlier this year</a>.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buzzfeed-deal-to-acquire-huffpost-from-verizon-media-2020-11#comments">Join the conversation about this story &#187;</a></p> <p>NOW WATCH: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pikes-peak-hill-climb-colorado-most-dangerous-racetrack-2020-2">Why Pikes Peak is the most dangerous racetrack in America</a></p>
