Skill acquisition crucial to local content policy success

Indigenous oil and gas companies have been asked to pay serious attention to the training of Nigerians in their employment to enable them to acquire the necessary skills crucial to the success of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act, 2010. The Group Managing Director, ARCO Petrochemical Engineering Company Limited, Mr. Alfred Okoigun, said this at a farewell briefing for four senior members of ARCO Marine, who were on their way to Fremantle, Western Australia, for training on general vessel and crew familiarisation. ARCO Marine, a subsidiary of ARCO Petrochemical Engineering Company Limited, is a major marine service provider in the oil and gas producing area of the Niger Delta.According to Okoigun, the objective of the training is to enable all crew members have a clear understanding of the vessel arrangement and operation in anticipation of delivery of vessels that will be deployed for smoother operations of the key players in the Niger Delta.The beneficiaries of the training are the Chief Operating Officer, ARCO Marine, Mr. Joseph Odu; Chief Engineer/Project Base Engineer, Mr. Tony Uvo; Electrical Supervisor, Captain Morrison Dudegha; and Project Base Engineer, Mr. Festus Nwasor.Okoigun said six members of staff of the ARCO Group recently attended a training course organised by General Electric Oil and Gas at its facilities in Port Harcourt, River State.
