Governors call for re-dedication

Published by Punch on Mon, 07 Nov 2011

Governors of Lagos, Babatunde Fashola; Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi; Edo, Adams Oshiomole; Oyo, Abiola Ajimobi; and Osun, Rauf Aregbesola, have urged Nigerians to re-dedicate themselves to their country by being law-abiding and prayerful. The governors, in different Eid-el-Kabir messages on Sunday, explained that fervent prayers could make the country stable.Fashola called on Lagos residents to live in peace, saying peace and harmony were necessary to enjoy the blessings of God.Fashola said, The occasion is an opportunity to renew our interaction with our fellow human beings and most essentially our duties to our God.I urge you to demonstrate the spirit of tolerance, unity, love, forgiveness, compassion and peace.Fayemi, however, urged commitment to one another and progress of the country among the citizens. He assured the people of Ekiti State of the readiness of his administration to preserve the peace and religious harmony in the state.Fayemi said, As we celebrate, let us know that the will of God is quite instructive. It means that with God, all things are possible. I can assure you that with faith in God, hardwork and unity of purpose, we will move the nation forward.Oshiomhole said the many crises in Nigeria threatened the fabric of her stability. The governor said, While it is important to rejoice and celebrate with family, Eid-el-Kabir should provide an opportunity to renew the spirit of obeisance to the will of our creator. The nation needs to be renewed and nourished with prayers and spiritual intercessions. I enjoin Nigerians to remember the country in their prayers.Ajimobi said the festive season of Id-el-Kabir should also be a time to reflect and pray for peace in the country. He said, It is only in an atmosphere of peace that Nigeria can achieve the desired greatness. Aregbesola said Nigerians should allow the symbolic killing of rams to mark the end of all vices in the country. He said, We should allow the symbolic slaughtering of rams to bring to an end to all our vices. We have for long lived with corruption which have caused us stagnation in this country. This festival is all about sacrifice and it is meant to be used for purification as well. If we can achieve this in our lives, it is certain that our country will be greater.
