Traditional rulers tasked on national unity

The Okuokpellagbeof Okpella Kingdom, Alhaji Yusuf Dirisu has charged traditional rulers in the country to ensure the country remained united even in the face of the negative perception being held by the West on possibility of the country's split.According to the traditional ruler, the challenge of ensuring unity of the country was one that should not be left in the hands of the political leadership alone, but a task every stakeholder should take up.The traditional ruler whose domain is in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State spoke with Community News as part of the activities line up to mark his 40 years on the throne.Alhaji Dirisu said, 'when traditional rulers and political leaders worked together to keep the country united, the fear of the country being divided by 2015 as predicted by a US diplomat would just be a mere wish.'He, however, said for traditional rulers to ensure unity in the country, they must first ensure peace and security in their domains.'One way to maintain peace and security is by being honest with yourself and the people whom you preside over; try as much as possible to give fair judgment in every matter brought before you.'We may not take this seriously, but I can authoritatively tell you that this had, in the past, turned communities against themselves,' he warned.The traditional ruler concluded, saying, 'traditional rulers should at all-time educate their subjects against violence.
